First dates can be exciting, terrifying, wacky, or just plain awful.

If you’re dating in midlife (or at any age), you’ve probably had some first dates that made you want to run for the hills. Since I ended my last relationship in February, I’ve been on a lot of first dates. The good news is that I keep on dating, no matter how bad they are. The bad news is that it gets frustrating at times, and I wonder where my life partner is hiding and why I haven’t met him yet. I’m grateful for every date I go on, because they all teach me something and bring me closer to my Mr. Right.

Last night, I gave a humorous speech for my Toastmaster’s club about 3 horrible first dates and what we can learn from them. The speech objective was to make people laugh, and I think I was pretty successful. Funny speeches are a challenge for me, which is why I chose to present 5 humorous speeches. Practice, practice, practice—whether for public speaking or out in the dating world. Practice dates lead to good first dates, which eventually lead to a great relationship.

Please excuse the poor quality of the video. It was filmed on my phone, and my camera is not the best. I’m sharing it so you can see that no matter who you are, we all have similar experiences with dating and relationships. And no matter how bad a date is, at the very least it makes a good story or speech. One of the dates you go on is going to be the right person for you. So keep on dating, and keep on laughing and learning.
