EP 501: Sherry Gaba – Codependency, Love Addiction, and Toxic Relationships

What is love addiction?

It’s a lifestyle addiction. Can be a romance addict. Love is their only identity. They long for attachment and the feelings they get from a relationship. They have codependency traits. The idea of being alone is debilitating to them. Huge fear of being alone. Try to change others. Have anxious attachment. They look to others for validation. They fear abandonment.

What does trauma have to do with picking toxic relationships?

There are reasons we have toxic relationships. As a child, if your parents were emotionally unavailable, or you were a parentified child, you’re more vulnerable to toxic people. You’re invisible due to neglect or abuse. You became other-focused as a child. If you don’t have an intimate relationship with yourself, you’ll have a toxic relationship with others.

How do you know if you are in a toxic relationship?

You are obsessively concerned with your partner, change who you are for them, walking on eggshells, second guessing yourself, anticipating what they might think or say, feeling guilty and always taking the blame. There’s a lot of fighting, drama and trauma, manipulating and controlling behaviors. You neglect your mental and physical health.

How do we overcome our addiction to toxic relationships?

Look at every relationship as an opportunity to heal and grow. Focus from the outside in. Every relationship is a reflection of ourselves. If we’re in toxic relationships, we have to change our relationship with ourselves. Be aware. Accept and welcome the process.

Some healing techniques: Have an intimate relationship with yourself. Find the light within. Tapping, regulating yourself, self-soothing, somatic work.
