At what point during your 25-year marriage did you realize you needed to take the risk and leave?
I had a good marriage. We got along and liked each other, but we didn’t have a lot of passion. We were good partners at parenting. I wanted more passion. I married him on the rebound. I knew in my gut that I shouldn’t be marrying him, but he was stable and I thought he’d be a good father.
After our kids were grown and left, and we were alone together, growing differently. There was no intimacy. That’s when I knew I had to leave for good.
While I was still married, I called my old boyfriend one night. I had googled him, and decided to reach out. He had never been married. We were nearing 50. We met for lunch, and within ten minutes, I knew I wanted to see him again. He was dating someone at the time, but seeing my ex-boyfriend, I made a decision to leave my husband, no matter what the future held. I realized I was depriving my husband and myself of happiness by staying.
What did you learn in the process of remarrying and trying again after divorce with someone with whom you’d had a failed relationship with previously?
We had both matured. We weren’t trying to be right, constantly fighting. Once we committed to dating, I never went back to the past. There was a clean slate. We had both grown and matured.
What are some of the ways you reclaimed your passions after the divorce?
After my kids went to college, I realized I didn’t feel as fulfilled in my corporate life. I was best in a mentoring role. I first became a beach body coach. That was really fun. Then, I’d see ads for life coaching, and they were little intuitive hits. That led me to a career change. I got certified and I now help empty nesters find purpose, because being an active mom is temporary. You need a life, too. Where has your life led you? We have wisdom. We dismiss that and don’t think it’s of value. You have walked your path for a reason. You are of value!
What is the #1 tip you have for someone who wants to go on their last first date?
Call your old boyfriend! You need to know who you are and what you want out of life. Love and get in touch with yourself. If you’re not healthy on the inside, you probably won’t succeed in relationships. Always be reading, growing and learning about connecting with your authentic self. I recommend reading Simple Abundance and practicing abundance every day.
