You got married after 40. How did you know he was the right guy for you?
I was never the 12-year-old who dreamed of marriage and a husband. I was focused on my business. My husband was my son’s basketball coach. We reconnected after my son went to college. Once you put out to the universe that you’re ready, you attract what you want. Starts with you being open and getting rid of the preconceived thoughts about what a man has to be. Be approachable, not always angry about men. Be social wherever you are.
In your book, How to Attract the Right Man, you write about the importance of building a healthy relationship. How do you define a healthy relationship?
- Listen to each other. Go underneath the words to what’s really being said.
- Communicate about your likes and dislikes.
- Communicate about your feelings and how their actions affect you.
- Define your relationship goals—what you both need to work on together.
- Be supportive of each other.
You write about red flags when dating. What are some of the most important red flags to avoid?
Look at how a man treats the people he’s close with; his parents, children, family, friends. That’s a sign of how he’ll be with you.
If a man says to a woman, “I just got a divorce and I’m not looking for anything serious right now”, he’s telling you what he wants. Don’t think you can change him.
What’s the difference between settling and compromising?
The difference is in the red flags. When the red flags are there, it’s settling. When you look back at failed relationships, you can see you were settling. If you just don’t want to be alone, but you can’t be with them long-term, it’s settling. If you’re walking on eggshells, that’s settling.
What’s compromising? If you’re with someone who has a different way of looking at things, you sit down and talk it out. That’s respectful. If you see he’s not paying attention to what you asked for, that’s settling. Set the tone early in the relationship.
What’s your best advice for women who want to go on their last first date?
Here’s what I did: Enjoy yourself. Go on dates with yourself. Don’t wait to do things only with a man. Stop worrying about what other people think. Enjoy your own company. Do things you LOVE. When you’re busy and active doing things you love, you won’t have time to sit home and worry about meeting Mr. Right. And allow it to come to you. Attract it into your life instead of working hard to pursue a relationship. When you resist, you feel pain.
