EP 569: Lisa Hutcherson – How to Get Over Dating App Fatigue

How would you define dating app fatigue, and what do you believe causes it?

Swipe-itis is another name for the fatigue, overload and disappointment in online dating. What caused it is a variety of things. People have forgotten how to socialize. Ways to meet people are dwindling. There are so many apps, and it becomes exhausting.

What would you say to someone who is suffering from dating app fatigue and feeling discouraged about finding new love?

Manage your expectations. Know going into online dating that ghosting will happen, as will ghostlighting, a new term that includes ghosting and gaslighting. Don’t spend so long talking through text before meeting. Don’t think about the endless pool of people so you can find something better. Set some boundaries about the number of apps and time you’ll spend.

What are some common signs that the person you are dating will make a good long-term partner?

Green flags: You share the same relationship goals and lifestyle, you align in politics and religion and/or can have healthy debate, you can be your authentic self, you can have tough conversations.

Red flags: Are they not investing in your friends and your life? They don’t have boundaries around time, space, etc.

What are some steps you can take early on in a relationship to set yourself up for long-term commitment?

Be vulnerable. Share more of  yourself as you deepen the relationship. Be light and authentic.

What is matchmaking, and how does it differ from dating apps?

Matchmaking is the polar opposite of the dating apps. It’s confidential and offline. We use 225 indicators of data, interview extensively, and use our intuition to match people. We get to know the client and their dream person.

What are your final words of advice for anyone who wants to go on their last first date?

There is someone out there for everyone, so don’t give up. Just change it up.
