If you struggle with making tough decisions, especially in your love life, use these five steps to help you make the right choices.

There are times when you’re faced with making tough decisions in your love life. “Should I stay or should I go?” “Should I speak up or let things go?” “Is this a true deal breaker or something I can live with?” Many of us let fear drive our decisions. We want to be absolutely certain we’re making the right choice, which can lead to indecision, second-guessing, or simply not choosing at all (which is a choice!). In this video, you’ll learn five steps to help you make the right choices for you.

How to Make Tough Decisions

Step 1: Write your thoughts down: If you keep your thoughts in your head, it can be overwhelming. Instead, write down everything you’re thinking. This will help you focus on what’s most important in forming your decision

Step 2: Evaluate your choices: Look at all of your options and the potential pros and cons of each one.

Ask yourself:

  • What are the pros and cons if I go with this option?
  • How important is each pro/con in terms of meeting my needs or objectives?
  • What’s the emotional benefit or consequence of each option?

Step 3: Narrow down your list: After going through the evaluation process, you’ll be able to eliminate some of your choices and get closer to making your decision.

Step 4: Evaluate the consequences of making the wrong decision: In relationships, this could mean settling for a relationship where you don’t feel safe/seen/understood vs. leaving to find a relationship where your heart feels safe. After evaluating what’s at stake, you’ll be better prepared to face the potential consequences and be proactive about handling any situation that comes up.

Step 5: Decide: Select the option that meets your desired outcome and fills your needs. Even if your decision causes others discomfort or it doesn’t work out for you, you can rest assured that you made that choice after evaluating all other options. No matter what happens, you can view this as a positive learning experience that will help you make even better choices in the future.

Knowing how to make tough decisions is key to a life that’s aligned with your values, as opposed to a life that meets everyone’s needs but your own.
