EP 509: Drs. Barbara & Michael Grossman – The Sexy Science of Falling in Love Forever

How do you manage to work AND live together?

Dr. Michael: We divide up responsibilities. We support each other and don’t take over each other’s responsibilities. We join together in our desires to achieve in our lifetime.

Dr. Barbara: We have separate specialties. We compliment each other.

What are three secrets to falling in love forever?

Dr. Barbara: Secret #1: Change is inevitable. There are distinct stages in a relationship over time. We evolve at different rates. If you don’t know that, you will face many challenges. Skills can resolve many issues that come up.

Dr. Michael: Secret #2 is if you’re not listening without interrupting, you’re not really listening. You’ve got to be open to understanding your partner has their own world view. Understand their perspective, not look to win the argument. It helps you see the world in a bigger way.

Dr. Barbara: One way partners can listen better, is to have one partner talk, and the other listens. Then you switch. There’s no conversation so people can process what they’ve heard and digest and understand each other.

Dr. Michael: Secret #3: Don’t expect your partner to read your mind. Ask kindly for what would make you happy. “It would really make me happy if…” As we grow and change, it’s very important to keep making requests.

How can we understand and support our partner’s requests and needs?

Dr. Michael: Don’t judge their requests. Thank them for what they do for you, even if you’d like something to change. Address the changes later.

How can we overcome conflict in a loving way to connect deeply again?

Dr. Barbara: Make an appointment and you get five minutes to share your point of view. Switch roles. And if it’s not ready to be resolved, sit on it, and make another appointment. You agree you won’t talk about it for 24 hours. Over the next few days, you get deeper each time you share. Make requests  and agreements.

Dr. Michael: It stretches you to see the world differently. By hearing them for five minutes, it creates your ability to see a bigger picture of your life together.

What makes romantic love so different from other types of love?

Dr. Michael: Romantic relationships press you to grow.

Dr. Barbara: Relationships help you understand deeper things about yourselves as you come together. It stretches you and grows who you are.

What’s your best advice for someone who wants to go on their last first date?

Dr. Barbara: Know your values, talents and interests. Develop yourself when you’re single, throughout life. Know what you’re looking for. Don’t just date one person at a time. Date three at a time, so you can rule out what’s not appropriate for you.

Dr. Michael: It’s important to be open to experiencing love, and that means you have to be centered in yourself. You need to have your own interests and desires for what makes you happy. Don’t look for someone to make you happy. Express what you love and what makes you happy to your partner.
