We Attract What We Believe We’re Worth

What patterns did you identify within yourself that were repeatedly leading you into the same type of relationship?

I didn’t have any real life examples of couples I wanted to emulate. I said I was never getting married. I didn’t believe in one person for us. I’m in my mid-forties, and I’ve never been married. There was a subconscious fear of losing my freedom. I travel a lot for work. I didn’t want to be told what I could and couldn’t do.

For me, it was important to be with someone equal or greater: happy in their job, financially responsible. I feared it didn’t exist. I saw so many people complaining about their relationships. The divorce rate is high. I wanted partnership, but I was not sure about commitment. I now know it’s about the right person. We’re not clones of each other. We don’t agree on everything. But we don’t feel we have to change each other to get along.

What were your relationship triggers?

I was afraid of codependency and losing my freedom. But, when two independent people come together, they have an interdependent relationship, not codependent. My fiancé and I respect and trust each other and give each other the freedom to do what we love.

How did you break the cycle and meet your partner?

We met in 2020 right after the Pandemic began. We had been so emotionally fulfilled from our work before the Pandemic, that we didn’t feel we were missing something. I wanted to call in partnership at that time. I identified the beliefs that were keeping me stuck. I identified my must haves: someone who is living their purpose and lit up every day. I wanted play and levity and a sense of humor. I also wanted someone who was adventurous about food. I got clear about how I wanted to feel and what was blocking me. I wrote it out. A month later, I met him. My friends knew him and introduced us. The moment I heard his voice, there was resonance. There was a sense of knowing.

What are your final words of advice for anyone who wants to go on their last first date?

It’s never too late. If you’re ready for love, use this time as preparation. Prepare yourself emotionally, energetically, in all ways, and your person will come into your life and match you. We can outgrow people. That’s okay. Don’t stunt your own growth to spare someone’s feelings. Take the good qualities from each relationship from your past, and add it to your ‘man quilt’ so you can find those qualities in the right partner. Self worth is the basis of any healthy relationship.
